One of the more perplexing problems associated with the emergence of the Phoenicians is the question of the origins and beginnings of distinctly Phoenician pottery. That style has long been defined and its basic elements have now become known in some detail as a result of excavations at Sarepta and Tyre. Phoenician pottery is important in establishing relative ceramic chronologicies and has been used as a key for delimiting absolute time periods.
